What Is Air Dry Clay?

Feb 13, 2025 · Arts & Crafts

Air-dry clay is a type of modelling clay that hardens and cures naturally when exposed to air, without needing to be baked or fired in a kiln. It is commonly used for crafting, sculpting, and DIY projects. Patarev is a lightweight, air-dry modeling clay made by the French brand Sentosphere. It is known for being soft, non-sticky, and highly elastic, making it easy to work with for both kids and adults.  Patarev is generally composed of:

  • Water-based polymers (giving it a soft, smooth texture)
  • Mineral fillers (for structure and moldability)
  • Natural or synthetic binders (helping it dry without cracking)
  • Non-toxic pigments (for vibrant colors

Benefits of Air-Dry Clay:

  • No Kilns or Baking Required: Dries at room temperature, making it accessible for home use.
  • Soft and Malleable: Easy to shape, carve, or mold.
  • Lightweight When Dry: Some air-dry clays are more porous than kiln-fired clay.
  • Non-Toxic: Safe for children and beginners.

Uses of Air-Dry Clay:

  • Sculpting: Ideal for making figurines, ornaments, and decorative pieces.
  • Crafts & DIY Projects: Used for jewellery, home décor, and school projects.
  • Prototyping: Artists and designers use it to create concept models before finalising designs in other materials.

Patarev air drying clay is rehydratable with water (so you can soften it again to reuse!)
