Peaceable Kingdom's Round the Mountain is a preschool cooperative board game from Peaceable Kingdom designed for young children who are just starting to play structured games. Instead of competing against one another, all players work together to help a train collect gems before too many falling rocks appear.
How it works
Players move a wooden train around a mountain track. A die rolls underneath the train as it moves, creating a fun tactile element. On each turn:
- Spin the spinner.
- Move the train twice around the track.
- Lift the train to reveal the die colour.
- Match colours to collect gems and fill mining carts.
The group wins by filling all the mining carts with gems before four falling rock tokens appear. Everyone either wins together or loses together.

The game is designed for two to four players and typically takes about 15 minutes to play, making it an ideal choice for pre-school attention spans.
The combination of bright gems, sturdy wooden components, and hands-on gameplay creates an experience that feels more interactive than many traditional children's board games.
Learning Through Play
While Round the Mountain is first and foremost a fun game, it also helps children develop important early learning skills. Players practice:
- Colour recognition and matching
- Counting and sorting
- Fine motor coordination
- Following rules and taking turns
- Cooperative problem-solving
- Teamwork and communication
Because children are working together rather than competing, the game encourages positive social interactions and helps build confidence.

Why Choose a Cooperative Game?
Many young children find losing difficult, which can sometimes turn game night into a frustrating experience. Cooperative games offer a different approach. In Round the Mountain, everyone shares the same objective. Players celebrate successes together and work as a team when challenges arise.
This collaborative style helps children learn that games can be about cooperation as well as competition. It also creates opportunities for parents and siblings to model teamwork and encouragement.
The simplicity of the rules makes this cooperative game easy to teach and quick to set up. The game requires no reading, allowing even very young children to participate independently, promoting both social and cognitive development.
In a world full of competitive games, Round the Mountain reminds us that sometimes the best adventures are the ones we take together.
